Qantas Flight Attendant Interview Tips: What They're Really Looking For
Landing a Role with Australia's Flag Carrier
Qantas is the airline most Australian cabin crew aspire to fly for, and for good reason. It's a world-class carrier with a proud history, exceptional training, and routes that span the globe. But getting through the Qantas recruitment process is no small feat. Competition is fierce, standards are high, and the interviewers are experienced at identifying the right candidates. Having worked closely with the Qantas recruitment process for many years, here's what I know they're really looking for, and how you can stand out.
Understanding Qantas Culture
Before you can impress in an interview, you need to understand the culture you're trying to join. Qantas prides itself on being the Spirit of Australia, a brand that represents warmth, reliability, safety, and premium service. Their cabin crew are ambassadors for that brand on every flight, whether it's a one-hour domestic hop or a 17-hour long-haul service to London.
Recruiters want to see that you genuinely understand and align with these values. This isn't about memorising the Qantas mission statement. It's about demonstrating through your examples and your demeanour that you naturally embody the qualities Qantas values. Warmth, professionalism, attention to detail, and a calm, capable presence are all central to the Qantas crew identity.
The Group Assessment Format
Qantas uses a structured assessment centre format that typically includes group activities, role plays, and observed discussions. You'll be placed in a group with other candidates and given scenarios to work through together while assessors observe and take notes.
The most important thing to understand about the Qantas group assessment is that it's not a competition. Assessors are looking for collaboration, not domination. They want to see you actively listen, build on other people's ideas, include quieter members of the group, and contribute constructively. The candidates who try to stand out by talking the most or taking charge of the group almost always miss the mark. Instead, focus on being a generous, engaged team player who communicates clearly and supports others.
Scenario exercises might involve planning a response to a customer service situation, discussing how to handle an in-flight challenge, or working together to solve a logistical problem. Approach these with a calm, solutions-focused mindset and always tie your contributions back to the passenger experience and safety.
Common Interview Questions
When you progress to the individual or panel interview stage, expect behavioural questions grounded in real-life experience. Qantas interviewers use the STAR method extensively, so structure your answers around Situation, Task, Action, and Result. Some common themes include:
- Tell me about a time you went above and beyond for a customer.
- Describe a situation where you had to deal with a difficult person.
- Give an example of when you worked effectively in a team.
- Tell me about a time you had to adapt to an unexpected change.
- Why do you want to work for Qantas specifically?
For that last question, generic answers won't cut it. You need to demonstrate specific knowledge of Qantas: their route network, their recent achievements, their values, and what makes them different from other carriers. Show that you've done your research and that Qantas is a deliberate, informed choice for you.
Grooming and Presentation Standards
Qantas has well-defined grooming standards for cabin crew, and these are assessed from the moment you arrive at the assessment centre. For women, this means neat, professional hair (typically pulled back from the face), natural-looking makeup, trimmed and clean nails with conservative polish, and well-fitted business attire in neutral tones. For men, a clean-shaven face or neatly groomed facial hair, tidy hairstyle, and a well-pressed suit are expected.
Visible tattoos must be coverable in uniform, and excessive piercings are not permitted. These aren't arbitrary rules. They reflect the premium brand image Qantas presents to its passengers, and your willingness to meet these standards signals your understanding of and respect for the role.
What Sets Successful Candidates Apart
After coaching hundreds of Qantas applicants, I can tell you that the candidates who succeed share a few common traits. They're genuinely warm, not performatively friendly, but authentically caring and approachable. They're well-prepared: they know Qantas, they've practised their answers, and they understand the process. And they're self-aware: they can articulate their strengths, acknowledge their development areas, and reflect thoughtfully on their experiences.
The biggest mistake I see is candidates who underestimate the preparation required. Qantas receives thousands of applications for every intake, and the assessment process is designed to identify the very best. Walking in without thorough preparation is a missed opportunity.
